About Erik Schutzman

Erik Schutzman I have had a desire to visually recreate the world around me as far back as I can remember using pencil, pastel, markers, oil and acrylic paints to realize my vision. As a shy child, it was my way of communicating with others. The more attention I got, the more it motivated me to create. As I grew older I began to gravitate towards oil painting. I admired how the old masters captured a moment in time for us to see hundreds of years later. When I travel to new places I am drawn to dramatic, historical, and culturally significant scenes. I would capture them in the moment with a camera, but it never really reproduces what I see. When I was introduced to en plein air painting, it opened my eyes to the new possibilities. Painting outside isn’t always feasible, so I’ve used a technique where I combine dozens of photos using Photoshop. For me, just recreating the scene isn’t enough. How light at sunset, sunrise, or other conditions allow light to play is important. Clouds also capture my interest especially at sunset. Scene, light, and atmosphere all come together in the creations I want to share with the world. Sometimes I capture a moment where all three come together, but it rarely happens. So I have to work even harder to recreate that scene which makes it even more rewarding.

Erik is a Charlotte based artist who works out of his home studio. He specializes in painting landscapes, cityscapes, portraits, pet portraits, but will paint just about anything that interests him. His inspirations include Claude Monet, Vincent van Gogh, Edward Hopper, Ned Smith, and N. C. Wyeth. His style straddles the line between impressionism and realism.

Erik grew up in Pittsburgh where he began painting and drawing portraits, wildlife, and sports stars at a young age. He lived in Cincinnati for 5 years before moving to Fort Mill in 2015.
